Staff Predictions: FSU vs Houston

The crew here at Nole Gameday offers their predictions for the 2015 Peach Bowl between Florida State and Houston.

Ethan Vaughan

34-20 FSU

I have a lot of respect for Coach Tom Herman and what he’s been able to accomplish in his first year at Houston. Their offense is scintillating and their defense is much better than expected. That being said, Houston just doesn’t have the depth of talent that FSU possesses as a result of multiple Top 5 recruiting classes over the last 4 years. I think the game will be close in the first half but FSU will wear Houston down by relying the legs of the nation’s best running back, Dalvin Cook.

Florida State fans will have a fun time in Atlanta as Chick-Fil-A always accommodates well for bowl games in the Georgia Dome. Plenty of young guys get the chance to see the field in this one which shall make the game quite entertaining to see the bright future for the year ahead.

The senior class will leave the Georgia Dome with a career 50 wins. I’ve got FSU beating Houston, 34-17.

Ryan Stalder

I believe Houston drew a truly horrible matchup in Florida State. The Noles have done a great job limiting mobile quarterbacks all season and I just don’t see Charles Kelly’s defense allowing Greg Ward Jr. to have a big enough game to outscore Dalvin Cook and the Seminole offense. FSU wins it 34-24.

I think this ones going to be a shootout. While Florida State’s defense hasn’t given up more than 25 points in a game this year, they haven’t faced an offense quite like Houston’s. Greg Ward Jr. and Dalvin Cook will both have big days, and there’s going to be a lot of scoring. The athleticism of FSU will eventually prevail, and the Houston defense will be worn out. Houston’s defense also likes to arm tackle, so expect Cook to have a couple long touchdown runs. I’ll take the ‘Noles 48-38 in a close one.

I think this game may be close by halftime. Houston has done a great job all year of coming out of the gate strong and I think Tom Herman will have his players fired up for this game. Greg Ward Jr. might not be the best passer FSU has faced all year, but he is a very dangerous runner and a superb athlete.

However, I think FSU pulls away in the second half to win comfortably. Dalvin Cook has another 200+ yard performance and the trio of Kermit, Bobo and Rudolph each has a nice day as well. Perhaps George Campbell or Pigg Harrison will have a nice catch or two as well. Defensively, I expect big things from Josh Sweat and Derwin James as they close out their phenomenal freshman campaigns. Oh, and Jalen Ramsey snags an interception in this game as well.

Let’s go FSU 41-20 over Houston.
