TITIK: FSU has the Best Safety Duo in the Country

Welcome to Things I Think I Know (TITIK), articles where I give earth shattering takes and opinions. Some will be bold, others might seem obvious. If you disagree, feel free to let me know why. Alas, enjoy the first installment:

Derwin James has seemingly been slotted by every expert as the #1 safety in the country. ESPN even ranked James as the number one overall player in the country. But few talk about his partner in crime, fellow safety Trey Marshall. After James went out for the year last season, Marshall quietly had a very productive year. His best game came against Clemson, where Marshall racked up 11 tackles including 8 solo. However, individual stats don’t truly show what an impact Marshall makes on the field. Prior to being ejected for targeting in the Orange Bowl, the Michigan offense had only scored 15 points and struggled to move the ball. Marshall was ejected with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. After his ejection, the Michigan offense was able to double their score in that short amount of time. While Marshall’s individual stats aren’t eye opening, his presence is certainly felt on the field. We already know just how good Derwin James is, and his return is crucial for this ‘Noles defense. With Trey Marshall standing by his side, FSU has by far the best safety duo in the country. It will be exciting to see these two paired up once again come September 2nd.
