Jamarcus Chatman spurns Miami to become a Seminole

In what was the second biggest surprise of the day for the `Noles, three-star defensive end Jamarcus Chatman has committed to Florida State over Miami. The Seminoles were trending for Chatman but their depth chart became more crowded after the additions of Malcolm Lamar and Dennis Briggs.

However, any win over Miami is a good one for FSU. The Hurricanes are paper-thin on the defensive line while the `Noles add another good prospect to their defensive front. Odell Haggins and Mark Snyder have an unfair amount of talent to work with between them.

Chatman was very interested in Miami due to their depth issues but he really loves Willie Taggart and the culture at Florida State. He also favors the distance and defensive scheme over what Manny Diaz installs down in Coral Gables.

This one was close. But in the end, Chatman’s official visit to Tallahassee in late January really opened his eyes to what FSU had to offer. It really is remarkable how quickly Taggart and his staff have been able to make an impact on prospects this cycle. What will they do with even more time under their belts in the next recruiting class?

By all accounts, Chatman is a good fit for new defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett’s system. He’s physical at the point of attack and could contribute against the run early in his college career. Chatman finished his senior season with 30 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks.

The 247 Sports Composite Rankings have him as the No. 507 overall recruit in the country and the No. 35 DT. Chatman is expected to play defensive end at the next level. He could fight for early playing time after the departures of Josh Sweat and Jalen Wilkerson to the NFL.
