Three Names to Know: Tribe 19 QB Search

Florida State’s 2018 recruiting class was in shambles when Willie Taggart took over as head coach. What Taggart was able to accomplish, ending National Signing Day with the number 11 class, the highest of all programs with new coaches, was nothing short of incredible. One position that wasn’t addressed in the 2018 class, however, was at quarterback. James Foster was Coach Taggart and Coach Walt Bell’s only target at the position after the early signing period, and FSU fell just short. It stings even worse for Florida State fans that Foster signed with Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M. With J.J. Cosentino and Jake Rizzo departing the program as well, a glaring hole is left at the signal caller position for the Seminoles. Here are three names to keep an eye on as top targets at the quarterback position.

  1. Taisun Phommachanh: Phommachanh is a big bodied dual-threat QB from Bridgeport Connecticut. Taisun is 6’4”, 210 pounds and his frame definitely has room to hold more weight. Currently rated as a high 4 star in March, he could absolutely receive that 5th star at some point in the summer. His play is eerily similar to that of former FSU quarterback, EJ Manuel. His high level of athletic ability allows him to maneuver outside of the pocket, and makes him a perfect fit for Taggart’s Gulf Coast Offense. It is also confirmed that Phommachanh will take a visit to Tallahassee in the spring. An existing relationship with Walt Bell also plays a large role, as Bell got to know Phommachanh while he was at Maryland.
  2. Sam Howell: Here is another QB who has an existing relationship with Offensive Coordinator Walt Bell. Coach Bell offered Howell his first Division 1 scholarship while he was at Maryland, bolstering Florida State’s chances of landing the elite prospect. Howell is an athletic quarterback with a rocket arm from North Carolina. He is relatively on the shorter side as he is only 6’1” and 217 pounds. Howell currently holds over 30 offers with the Florida State offer arriving on the 2018 signing day as well. The playing style that Howell compares to is Baker Mayfield, the 2017 Heisman Trophy recipient. We will continue to monitor if Howell sets up a visit to Tallahassee sometime this spring.
  3. Jayden Daniels: I believe this one is more of a longshot compared to the first two. Daniels is 6’3”, the 170-pound dual threat from San Bernardino, California. Jaiden Woodbey, a current early enrollee, was a former teammate of Daniels on the 7 on 7 team, Gr0undZer0. It is believed that the Gr0undZer0 team will visit Tallahassee sometime this spring, which would be an enormous boost to Florida State’s chances at landing the elite quarterback from California. Daniels was offered in December of 2017 before the signing day offers for Howell and Phommachanh. Daniels is an accurate quarterback who is not afraid to venture outside the pocket, which would be another excellent potential fit for the Gulf Coast Offense. Daniels is currently rated as a 4 star but as with the previous quarterbacks mentioned, don’t be surprised if he receives that 5th star over the summer.
