Amari Gainer: I’m real close with the coaching staff

Amari Gainer has just announced his intentions to play football for Florida State University.

Gainer is a four-star linebacker out of Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee, FL. He is currently rated as the number two outside linebacker in the country and #32 overall prospect by Rivals.

With the commitment, FSU now has 10 verbal pledges from recruits in the 2018 class. They also have a chance to climb into the top-5 of the recruiting rankings. The Seminoles will know whether they will secure the services of another top linebacker in Teradja Mitchell when he decides between FSU and Ohio State next Friday.

Gainer spoke with me and he is planning on taking all five of his official visits. He’s decided on four of the five schools he’ll visit. FSU, Alabama, Texas and UCLA. Gainer said he really liked Alabama’s facilities on his visit there and has high hopes for the facilities that Texas is currently installing. However, despite Gainer wanting to take his official visits, his commitment to Florida State is very solid.

First off, he has a great relationship with Jimbo Fisher. Gainer says he has known Fisher since he was a small child. He also says that he has developed a close relationship with Charles Kelly, and that Kelly has been adamant about wanting him at FSU. Gainer knows that this staff wanted him bad. He wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and attend FSU, but is ready to make his own legacy at the school.

He models his game after Telvin Smith because of the similarities in their bodies. Gainer is about 6’4” and 205 lbs. while Smith is listed at 6’3” and 218 lbs. by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is an extremely long prospect and that helps make him a versatile linebacker. Gainer exhibits the ability to get to the quarterback while also being able to provide valuable contributions in coverage.

Gainer also does a good job disengaging from blockers and he has a very quick jump off the snap, he seems to read snap counts very well. He is a solid tackler who wraps up and can cause fumbles. His fundamentals give him an advantage on the field. I would like to see him add a little more weight, but too much could detract from his abilities to be so versatile across the field.

I do think Gainer will have a good shot at earning a fifth star with a good performance at The Opening later this summer. He also is planning to enroll at Florida State early, which is big news. He’ll have a quicker start to his college career and will likely have a better chance at making an early impact.

NoleGameday: You’re ranked as one of the top linebackers in the country. What went into your decision to commit to Florida State?

Amari Gainer: “Just the atmosphere, the tradition, and I’m real close with the coaching staff too.”

NoleGameday: Who was the runner-up in your recruitment?

Gainer: “Probably Texas because I still have to get up there and see the campus. And then probably Alabama too just because they’re known for winning.”

NoleGameday: How big of a factor did your relationships with FSU’s coaches and players have on your commitment?

Gainer: “It was very big. I’ve known the coaches since I was small and they offered me early so I knew they were interested. And it was one of my first big power five school offers so I knew they wanted me bad too.”

NoleGameday: Your father also attended Florida State, did being a legacy recruit have any impact on choosing FSU?

Gainer: “Just a little bit because we played different positions. I’m just trying to get bigger, faster so I can start my own legacy in college.”

NoleGameday: What part of your game do you feel like sets you apart at the next level?

Gainer: “I feel like I can cover and also pass rush, being able to do both gives you an advantage at the next level.”

NoleGameday: Who are you most excited to play with?

Gainer: “Hopefully Teradja Mitchell. On the team, Marvin Wilson, Stanford Samuels, and Cyrus Fagan.”

NoleGameday: Have you talked with any of the other top prospects in 2018 about playing with you at FSU?

Gainer: “Yeah, I’ve talked to all the FSU commits. Asante (Samuels), AJ (Lytton), and Robert (Cooper). Hopefully Josh (Moore), Houston (Griffith) and Teradja (Mitchell), I’m trying to get them over here too.”

NoleGameday: What kinds of things are you working on refining before you get to Florida State?

Gainer: “Just making sure I stay focused. Get off the quarterback, get some more sacks, get some more tackles and to just get ready for the next level.”

NoleGameday: What will you be studying at FSU?

Gainer: “Hopefully business and sports medicine so I can be a sports therapist.”

NoleGameday: Do you have any goals or things you want to achieve during your senior season?

Gainer: “My goal is to beat all my records from last year and get more sacks.”
