Florida State Takes on Xavier in the Round of 32

Following a dominant first-round performance against Missouri, Florida State will face Xavier in a rematch from last years NCAA tournament. The Musketeers easily ended FSU’s season last March with a 25 point win over the Seminoles in Orlando.

Advancing to the Sweet 16 will be a tall task as the ‘Noles will likely be without their second-leading scorer, Terrance Mann. “I think he has a groin strain,” Hamilton said Saturday according to ESPN. “He was quite sore last night. I don’t expect him to play unless the doctor comes and tells me something different. But we have to wait and see.”

The absence of Mann will force others to step up as FSU takes on the top seed in the West region. Xavier is led by senior guard Trevon Bluiett who averages nearly 20 points per game. Fellow senior guard J.P Macura is also able of filling up the stat sheet as he did in the Musketeers opening round game against Texas Southern. Macura scored 29 points in 34 minutes of action as Xavier coasted to a 102-83 win.

Florida State’s top three scorers from their opening round win over Missouri all came off the bench. With Mann likely out, the Seminoles will need another strong team performance. Mfiondu Kabengele, Trent Forrest, and P.J. Savoy all scored double digits in FSU’s opening round win and will need more of the same Sunday night.

Xavier ranks 4th nationally scoring nearly 85 points per game. Like FSU, Xavier likes to push the ball up and down the court and looks to score in bunches. The Musketeers are capable of deep shooting 37% on three-point attempts but their overall offensive efficiency sets them apart, ranking 9th nationally.

Xavier is led by an experienced starting five which includes three seniors and four players from last years team that advanced to the Elite Eight. The Musketeers are 29-5 on the season and won the regular season Big East championship. Xavier is currently a 5.5 point favorite heading into the game. Sunday’s game is set to tip-off at 8:40 pm est on TNT. The Seminoles are seeking their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2011.
