FSU snaps curse, lands Armwood duo

Willie Taggart is already breaking down walls Jimbo Fisher couldn’t have dreamed of climbing. Florida State’s new head coach just landed not one, but two recruits from Armwood High School. Prior to this recruiting cycle, the Seminoles had never landed a single prospect from Armwood. Now they’ve got Warren Thompson and Malcolm Lamar

Traditionally, most of the elite talent from the Seffner based school has found its way to Gainesville or the West Coast. Maybe we’ve just witnessed the beginning of the end of that trend.

Thompson and Lamar were both pledged to Taggart while he was the head coach at Oregon. Like Tre’Shaun Harrison, they backed off of their commitments after Taggart left for FSU. They then visited campus together for a big recruiting weekend in December but decided to keep their recruitments open.

Despite visiting South Carolina in late January, Thompson elected to commit to FSU last week. The four-star receiver cited his relationship with Taggart and also noted that he grew up a fan of the `Noles. Thompson had 27 catches for 487 yards and 6 touchdowns as a senior. He’s rated as the No. 157 overall prospect and the No. 28 receiver.

As for Lamar, he grew up a Florida fan and the previous staff left a sour taste in his mouth. Jimbo Fisher never extended an offer to him and Lamar never had even visited Tallahassee before prior to December. However, when Taggart got to town things began to change.

Lamar had a close relationship with Taggart, and that was really the only reason he gave the Seminoles a chance. The four-star defensive end visited campus again over the weekend and now has some familiarity with the new defensive staff. He’s expected to be a dominant player for Harlon Barnett. Lamar finished his senior season with 48 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. The 247 Sports Composite Rankings have him as the No. 222 overall prospect and the No. 9 SDE.

What a haul by Taggart and his newly formed staff. Their efforts have been quite fruitful thus far on the recruiting trail.
