Grad-transfer OL Ryan Roberts’ Impact

The Florida State fanbase has been itching for two things all off-season: new coaches and offensive line help. Well, one of those issues just became easier to deal with by way of Ryan Roberts. Roberts is a graduate transfer from NIU standing at 6-foot-6, 300 pounds and is a likely candidate to start this season for the ‘Noles at the tackle position.

He’s developed from a two-star tight end to a starting FBS offensive tackle in the past four years. He’s put on 50 pounds and has kept the athleticism from his high school days in Michigan. He started every game for NIU in ’17 but injuries hampered him this past season as he was only able to start in two games. FSU fans may remember the NIU game from this past season where Roberts kept Brian Burns relatively quiet for the entire game (though they did help him by chipping Burns on passing downs).

No one is saying Ryan Roberts will make All-ACC but he raises the floor of this unit dramatically. This was an excellent grab for Coach Frey and it won’t be the last time he lands a graduate transfer if I were to guess. The main targets include RJ Proctor from Virginia and Parker Braun from Georgia Tech.
