Report: Alonzo Hampton out as Florida State special teams coordinator

According to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports, Alonzo Hampton has been relieved of his duties as Florida State’s special teams coordinator.

The news should come as no surprise to Florida State fans after the Seminoles fielded one of the worst special teams units in the country in 2018. The Tribe ranked 95th out of 130 teams in the nation according to the S&P adjusted special teams rankings.

The move opens up another full time assistant position on Florida State’s staff. Speculation has been that new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles plans to bring his offensive line coach Randy Clements to Tallahassee. It remains unclear how the coaching staff shuffle will work out as current OL coach Greg Frey is currently still employed by Florida State.

There is a possibility that Frey could take over coaching tackles and tight ends as he did at Michigan while Clements would be responsible for the interior. The logical move from there would be to slide current tight ends coach Telly Lockett over to special teams.

Stay tuned to Nole Gameday as we continue to monitor all of the moving pieces regarding Florida State’s coaching staff in the coming weeks.
