TITIK: James Blackman Doesn’t Need to be Great for FSU to be Great

Welcome to Things I Think I Know (TITIK), articles where I give earth shattering takes and opinions. Some will be bold, others might seem obvious. If you disagree, feel free to let me know why. Here’s the third installment:

Everyone had a different take away from the loss to Alabama. Some think the loss of Francois is catastrophic, others see the same old struggling offensive line, and so on. What I took away from week one’s monumental matchup is that the two best defenses in the country played that night in Atlanta. Florida State’s defense had an elite performance, and the final score does not reflect their efforts. Derwin James’ return lived up to the hype, and Demarcus Christmas played out of his mind. Ermon Lane made some elite open field tackles, and Matthew Thomas was as good as advertised. Alabama’s biggest play came on a broken coverage with their best receiver Calvin Ridley lined up against FSU true freshman Stanford Samuels III. Guarding Ridley is no easy task, especially for a true freshman playing in his first game.

In addition, 5 out of Alabama’s 7 drives in the second half started in FSU territory. How Alabama didn’t score more points is a testimony to just how good this Noles’ defense is. The problems resided on special teams in this game, and those problems are easy fixes for the most part. The offensive line played well above my expectations.  The run game was stagnant, but that was to be expected against the Crimson Tide defense. Jacques Patrick and Cam Akers should provide plenty of firepower moving forward. With all that said, James Blackman doesn’t need to be an elite quarterback for FSU to be an elite team. The strengths of this team are the defense and the run game. Blackman also has some exceptional receievers around him such as Nyqwan Murray, Auden Tate, and Keith Gavin. He needs to be smart with the football, but if James can consistently throw catchable balls I trust this receiving core to do their job. Blackman has a long season ahead of him, but from what I’ve seen so far, he’s up to the task.
