VIDEO: James Blackman freshman highlights

Rising sophomore quarterback James Blackman entered the spring with a slight edge in the race for the starting job. Deondre Francois is still recovering from the patella injury he suffered against Alabama. And Blackman has a leg up on Bailey Hockman due to his experience at the collegiate level.

The Belle Glade native had his struggles out of the gate, throwing just nine touchdowns to eight interceptions over his first eight starts. However, over the final four games of the season, Blackman threw 10 touchdown passes to only three interceptions. He would wind up finishing his chaotic freshman season by passing for 2230 yards with 19 touchdown passes to 11 interceptions.

Sure, the stats weren’t stellar, but it was an admirable performance by a true freshman who wasn’t truly ready to see the field yet. When you throw in Fisher’s complicated offense and then his defection, it was quite the experience for an 18-year-old kid.

With knowledge under his belt and a developing confidence, Blackman has the early lead to start in Willie Taggart’s first season at Florida State. He’s got the best arm on the roster but it will all come down to how Blackman masters the gulf coast offense.
