2023 OT Johnny Williams talks FSU, growing recruitment

Last week, many recruits in the 2023 class earned their first rankings by recruiting services. 2023 offensive tackle Johnny Williams debuted on 247Sports as a top-200 prospect in his class with a four-star distinction. Early on in his recruitment, the rising offensive lineman has picked up offers from Georgia, Florida State, Virginia, and Georgia Tech.

The Seminoles joined his offer sheet in late November courtesy of tight ends coach Chris Thomsen.

“Coach Chris Thomsen offered me from Florida State,” Williams said. “We had a conversation about work, school, my life, and what I want to go to college to be.”

While Williams’ recruitment is really just getting started, there are two teams that are recruiting him the hardest right now. Georgia and Florida State.

“Georgia and Florida State are the teams that are recruiting me the hardest so far,” Williams said. “They’re ready to get me down there and see me at a camp.”

The Georgia native calls the FSU staff every week to check in. He’s also begun to build a relationship with offensive line coach Alex Atkins, who would coach him at the next level if he does choose to sign with the Seminoles.

“I call them every week to check up on them,” Williams said. “They give me information about the school and we just have really good talks.”

“I’ve gotten the chance to speak with coach Atkins,” Williams continued. “He’s a great coach with really good character and he’s pretty chill.”

Williams is planning to be in Tallahassee this upcoming weekend to check out Florida State’s spring game. He’s looking forward to getting a look at the offense and how the coaches are in a game-like situation.

“I really want to see how the offense works and how the coaches are, are they like chill or very energetic?” Williams said. “I would love for it to feel like a family and that they really want me there.”

The Northeast High School product has spent most of his offseason in the weight room continuing to build up his frame as he prepares for his junior season. Williams has also worked on his technique and wants to help his team push for a state championship in 2021.

The 6-foot-6, 286-pound offensive tackle is planning trips to Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Virginia over the summer. Some of the main factors in his recruitment are academics and his fit with the coaches. He’s in no rush to make a decision but is planning to think things over following his upcoming season.
