2023 RB Jaylen Johnson earns offer following second scrimmage

Florida State held its second scrimmage of the spring a few weeks ago and multiple prospects were in Tallahassee to check out the progress the Seminoles have made. 2023 RB Jaylen Johnson and his head coach made the trek down to campus from Baxley, GA after being invited by Ryan Bartow, FSU’s director of high school relations.

“Coach Bartow,” Johnson said. “He talked to one of my coaches earlier that week and told them we should come up there that weekend. Myself, my head coach, and a friend went up there to watch everything.”

Johnson was focused on running backs coach David Johnson, who he described as “very energetic,” and his unit during the scrimmage. He likes how the ‘Noles use their backs in multiple ways to impact the game.

“It was good,” Johnson said. “Their playstyle was fast, I like how they use the running backs a lot, in the pass game too.”

Following the action, the Georgia native and his coach got a chance to tour some of the campus and step onto the field at Doak Campbell Stadium.

“We didn’t really get to see too much,” Johnson said. “We looked at the campus, the basketball gym, the soccer field, some things like that.”

“Walking on the field after the scrimmage,” Johnson continued. “I didn’t expect to go down there and walk on the field at a college stadium, it was amazing.”

On his drive home, running backs coach David Johnson face-timed Johnson and his coach to inform him that Florida State was extending a scholarship. The Seminoles became the second offer in Johnson’s growing recruitment. South Carolina and UCF have also joined his offer sheet over the last few days.

“Coach David Johnson,” Johnson said. “He face-timed me after the scrimmage. He was just telling me how he liked my film, my grades were good, and that they were gonna offer me. I didn’t think it was gonna come this fast, it was a surprise.”

As a sophomore, the Appling County High school product rushed 61 times for 591 yards (9.7 YPC) and three touchdowns. He added five catches for 168 yards and two more scores. Johnson has even more lofty goals for his upcoming junior season.

“I want to get bigger, faster, strong and put on about 10 pounds heading into my junior year,” Johnson said. “I’d like to get 1,500 all-purpose yards this year and 10 or more touchdowns.”

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound running back is not planning to return to FSU for the spring game and he doesn’t currently have any other visits set up this offseason. Johnson is unranked in the 2023 class according to 247Sports but we expect that to change in the near future.
