2023 WR Raymond Cottrell visits Florida State for the second straight weekend

Multiple recruits were in Tallahassee this past Saturday to check out Florida State’s second scrimmage of the spring. 2023 wide receiver Raymond Cottrell made his second straight weekend trip to campus with a coach from his high school. He spent most of his time focusing on wide receivers coach Ron Dugans and his unit.

“I was watching the wide receivers,” Cottrell said. “They looked way better than the last time I came. Coach Dugans really teaches them a lot.”

During the action, #Tribe22 quarterback commitment, Nicco Marchiol, made his way over to Cottrell and spent about half an hour speaking with him about the program. The Milton High School product came away impressed with their conversation.

“That guy is great, that’s a cool guy, I like that guy,” Cottrell said. “The way he was talking about Florida State, I was like, ‘dang I might have to come here.’ I’m not gonna lie, that’s a good dude.”

“I’m excited because he’s committed here,” Cottrell continued. “He knows ups and downs about this school. We were just kicking it. I heard a lot of good things. He was just telling me about how coach Norvell treats him like family and they call him every single day.”

Once the scrimmage wrapped up, FSU wide receiver Keyshawn Helton walked over to the stands and had an extended conversation with Cottrell. Offensive tackle Darius Washington also briefly talked with the group. Cottrell noted that Helton is someone that he looks up to.

“I told Keyshawn [Helton] that some of the wide receivers weren’t getting separation and stuff,” Cottrell said. “Keyshawn is like my mentor, we talk. He really helped me out a lot. That’s who I look up to.”

The Florida native announced on Monday that he will make his commitment following his junior season. It seems like he’s beginning to grow tired of the recruiting process and the constant attention that it brings.

“Yeah, I’m close,” Cottrell said. “This recruiting stuff is like an attention-seeker. I feel like if I just commit, I don’t have to worry about this. I’m just gonna stay committed and loyal to whoever I commit to.”

Florida State has positioned itself inside Cottrell’s top-5 thanks to his relationship with the coaching staff. He likes the standard that Mike Norvell and his staff are trying to instill in the Seminoles.

“To be honest,” Cottrell said. “It’s like I already know them. It’s a family thing. Every coach on this staff is a good person. They set high standards for each and every single player. You can be a walk-on, anything, they set very high standards.”

“They’re [FSU] definitely in my top-5.”

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound wide receiver is currently ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect, the No. 4 WR, and the No. 8 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2023 class according to 247Sports.
