Analyzing the New Staff: Telly Lockette

Out with the old and in with the new. Coach Taggart’s fully assembled coaching staff only has one mainstay compared to Jimbo Fisher’s staff, which happens to be Odell Haggins. With that being the case, ‘Noles fans have nine new assistant coaches to get to know next season, and we are beginning a new weekly series to offer you the first look at each.

In this week’s edition of “Analyzing the New Staff” we are introducing Telly Lockette. The South Florida Native joins Taggart’s staff after coaching running backs at Oregon State the past couple of years. Lockette is known as a legend in South Florida and has ample experience coaching incredible talent down south. Included in that incredible talent are Florida State standouts, Dalvin Cook and Devonta Freeman. Lockette was the head coach of Miami Central during the period of the two prolific backs high school careers. Before accepting the Oregon State job, Lockette worked with Taggart as the running backs coach for the University of South Florida.

As far as coaching experience goes, Coach Lockette is extremely qualified. Lockette winning three state championships in highly competitive South Florida is no simple feat. In addition to the success of state titles, he has multiple years of college coaching experience as well. The production at the tight end position has been lacking the past couple years and Lockette looks to rejuvenate the position at Florida State. With Ryan Izzo declaring for the NFL Draft, Tre’ McKitty and Naseir Upshur will most likely be the two athletes primed to have breakout years at the tight end position.

During the 2016 season at Oregon State, Lockette’s running back group produced record-breaking numbers, averaging over five yards per carry. After coaching prolific backs such as Dalvin Cook and two-time pro bowler Devonta Freeman, it is not surprising that his backs produced at an incredible rate during his tenure in Corvallis.

With Telly Lockette on staff, Florida State now has a juggernaut recruiter to attack South Florida. The Miami-Dade and Broward County area hosts some of the most elite prospects each and every year. Lockette has the advantage of having plentiful connections down south which can provide excellent returns come signing day. Elite, four-star offensive lineman Dontae Lucas, stated the impact of the Telly Lockette hire had on his recruitment. Lucas explained, “Nah I knew as soon as they hired Telly Lockette that I was already locked in and loaded with FSU.”

The hire of Telly Lockette is an exciting one and is destined to provide great returns not only on the field but on the recruiting trail as well. South Florida claims a plethora of talent and with Lockette on the staff, it provides the ‘Noles a great advantage for the recruits to end up in Tallahassee.
