Head Coach Willie Taggart and the Florida State Seminoles added another defensive lineman to their 2019 recruiting class as WDE Derrick McLendon chose the Seminoles over NC-State and in-state rival Florida. McLendon, who committed earlier this afternoon at the Rivals 5-Star Challenge, joined SDE Curtis Fann and DT/DE Derick Hunter as the ‘Noles third commitment over a period of eight days.

The 6-foot-3 235-pound edge rusher saw his recruiting process take off during his sophomore year as he landed offers from SEC powerhouse programs such as UGA, Alabama, and Auburn. Since then McLendon gained over 35 offers in which he trimmed his list down to UF, NC-State and FSU.

After setting a timetable following his most recent visit to Tallahassee on June 1st, the Georgia native officially visited NC-State shortly before his decision that ultimately resulted in him choosing the Seminoles.

McLendon, who plays for the peach state powerhouse Tucker High School, wrapped up his second visit to Tallahassee in two months earlier this June where he came out astonished just as he did following his first trip to see a spring practice in early April.

“It is a feeling,” McLendon stated in an interview with Noles247 about Head Coach Willie Taggart and his staff. David Kelly, who is the primary recruiter in the Tucker area, established a relationship with Derrick dating back to his days with Taggart in Eugene. Although after frequent communication with defensive ends coach Mark Snyder, Derrick gained strong interest after being pitched the opportunity of playing both defensive end positions.

There was a lot of things to feel good about if you were FSU when it came to getting McLendon. With the connection he and Taggart have built since his first visit in early April, and the chance of him gaining playing time early, Derrick should be a strong commitment for Tribe19. On top of that, he has family that lives not quite an hour of Tallahassee in Live Oak, Florida which should make him feel right at home at Florida State.

McLendon who is currently the No. 371 player nationally became the ‘Noles 13th commit for their 2019 class that stands at 12th in 247’s Football Recruiting Composite Team Rankings. Derrick plans to make an official visit to Florida State sometime in the near future.
