Emerging 2021 WR Erick Smith Jr Visits FSU

Pensacola, FL wide receiver Erick Smith Jr. has begun to emerge onto the national recruiting scene. The 6’5”, 200 pound playmaker has been on Florida State’s radar since December. Today, the Booker T. Washington star made a visit to FSU with a local group of players. We spoke to him about the visit, and to see how his recruitment has been going so far.

The past eight weeks have been a whirlwind for wide receiver Erick Smith Jr. Offers from Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Missouri, Michigan and Lousiville have come in, putting him at 32 offers.

“I have 32 offers, I think,” said Smith Jr. “I really love Middle Tennessee State. FIU, Memphis, USF, Ole Miss…those six are the ones I can think of off of the top of my head. Other than FSU, Auburn has been talking to me. I am really interested in Tennessee, and Georgia just reached out. Those four haven’t offered yet.”

Florida State has been building its relationship with Erick since late 2019. Wednesday he was able to make it into town for a visit. While he wasn’t able to meet with the coaches or tour the facilities, he says it was the first time he has really walked around campus seeing what FSU is like.

“Coach Dugans started talking to me in late December, early January,” said Smith Jr. “My head coach and I were talking about schools and the ones that have been staying in touch. A couple players from my area were going to visit and I was asked if I wanted to tag along. Coach Dugans and I have a solid relationship. He knows who I am and how I play. In 10th grade, my receivers coach was E.G. Green. He told Coach Dugans about me then. It was good even though it is still the dead period. Even though I didn’t get the offer today I think I am going to go back in two or three weeks and will probably get it then.”

“It’s the third time I’ve been there,” continued Smith Jr. “Two years ago I went there for a basketball tournament and walked around. The second time I was there I walked around but this time I got to see much more. I got a chance to walk all around the campus and over where the indoor facility is.”

An offer from the Seminoles would hold a lot of weight for Erick.

“FSU is my childhood dream school,” said Smith Jr. “Ever since I started watching I have followed (them). Getting an offer would mean a lot to me. I would weigh my options but they would definitely be at the top of my list.”

FSU’s new coaching staff likes to have long-bodied athletes that can play inside or outside receiver in the offense. Smith Jr thinks he’s a deep threat that can fit in any offense.

“I am a long receiver and I work really hard,” said Smith Jr. “I am a deep threat that high points the ball really well. I am able to get in and out of my breaks and I have great hands. I had 58 catches with zero drops. I’m working on being like smaller receivers in how they snap down and are quick. I want to work on my stride and get to that second gear.”

Erick is currently planning to make a decision around the scheduled early signing period. He says that depends on if he has a senior season.

“I’m looking at a mid-December decision right now,” said Smith Jr. “I hope there is a season – it would suck to only play three years of varsity football but I have to believe in God and put it in his hands. I’ll keep working hard while getting ready for college.

Erick will be looking for the best place that makes him feel at home and takes care of him while also making him a better man on and off the field. Getting a degree is important as Smith Jr is interested in plastic surgery.

FSU is evaluating this talented wideout very closely, and another visit at the end of the month would mean Smith Jr is firmly on their radar. Stay tuned as we track his recruitment and his upcoming season.
