Florida hires John Herron away from FSU

While the whispers have been in the air ever since the Saturday Night Live event, it looks former Florida State Assistant Director of Player Personnel John Herron is officially heading back to Gainesville. Herron, better known as coach Hova, spent 2018 with the Seminoles after Dan Mullen chose not to retain him as a member of his staff during his first year as head coach with the Gators.

Most of his time in Tallahassee was spent assisting FSU’s program with recruiting. He was involved with on-campus visits and helping make sure they were coordinated and went well. Outside of that, part of Herron’s role was to identify new prospects and watch tape on potential recruits. His connections to high school coaches in South Florida were also beneficial on the recruiting side when it came to building relationships.

After spending 14 years as a high school basketball coach, Herron was hired as director of on-campus recruiting by former Florida coach Jim Mcelwain in June 2016. Several current Gators, including defensive back CJ Henderson, spoke highly of coach Hova’s efforts during their recruitments and he seems to have been a popular off-field staff member during his previous tenure in Gainesville. As of now, it looks like his role with the Gators will be the same one he held with the ‘Noles.

Florida State no longer needed Herron in his current role after moving former wide receivers coach David Kelly to recruiting coordinator earlier this offseason. With Kelly taking over the bulk of the recruiting duties, we’ve seen staff members like Bob LaCivita and now Herron, move on from FSU.
