Former WR coach no longer on FSU’s staff

According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Florida State recruiting coordinator David Kelly is no longer a member of the staff. At this point in time, he has been replaced by Mario Edwards Sr, who had been assisting the defense in an off-the-field role.

Kelly joined former head coach Willie Taggart’s staff as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in January 2018. During the 2019 offseason, FSU hired former Miami assistant Ron Dugans to coach the wide receivers while Kelly moved to solely recruiting coordinator. Kelly’s waiver to move off-the-field was denied by the NCAA in March, leaving the ‘Noles without a tenth assistant coach on the sidelines this year.

With Florida State and the veteran coach parting ways, Edwards can step in to help the team on the field. He typically works with the defensive backs and could alleviate some of the pressure on Harlon Barnett’s shoulders. It seems like FSU is focused on the defensive side of the ball as they prepare for a clash in Gainesville next week. It figures to be a game that could determine a lot about this staff heading into 2020.

The Seminoles also promoted analyst Jim Leavitt to a full-time position following Taggart’s firing. The immediate implications of this move are unknown, Kelly did have good relationships with most of the #Tribe20 class. This season continues to be anything but normal.
