Francois named starting quarterback at Hampton

A source told NoleGameday that Deondre Francois would be transferring to Hampton on July 19, almost two weeks before the news became official. It seems like the former Florida State quarterback is settling in nicely at his new home so far. According to The Virginian-Pilot’s Dave Johnson, Francois has been named the Pirates’ starting quarterback after coming out on top of a five-way battle.

Head coach Robert Prunty announced his decision to the media on Wednesday afternoon. Francois will debut against Elizabeth City State on Aug. 31.

As I’ve mentioned before, Hampton actually has a chance to be a solid team with Francois at the helm. The Pirates went 7-3 last season and return most of their offensive firepower from a year ago, including their top two running backs and four of their top five receivers. Francois will be challenged in road trips to Liberty and Charleston Southern but his big-game experience will be beneficial in helping the rest of his team settle down.

Prunty had nothing but great things to say about his new signal-caller, “He’s just a very cerebral guy,” Prunty said according to The Virginian-Pilot. “He’s one of those film guys. He’ll spend four, five hours in there watching film. We literally have to run him out of the film room.”

“You can see his leadership ability from every aspect. He’s been phenomenal on and off the field. He has some special qualities. We just have to put him in the right position to display those qualities.”

If the Orlando native can continue to stay on the right track moving forward, he has a good shot at turning his career around. Francois has the arm to be an NFL quarterback, it’s what’s between the ears that’s been holding him back. Hopefully, he’s finally found a place where he can just focus and play football.
