FSU Baseball to take on 2 in-state teams for Fall Ball

Haylee Blitch

FSU baseball will have a lot of firsts in 2020 and have a much different look with Mike Martin Jr. taking over the helm. Jr will get to preview his team and his style of coaching against 2 quality opponents in the fall. According to D1baseball.com, the Noles will take on the State College of Florida and Jacksonville as part of their fall schedule. The Noles will take on the Manatees on 10/18, a Friday, and the Dolphins on 11/9, a Saturday, while the football team takes on Boston College. Both weeks, the football team will have away games, so the baseball team and Jr. will be the main highlight in Tallahassee.

The Noles faced Jacksonville in fall ball last year, as well as 3 times in the regular season, so FSU fans are quite familiar with the Dolphins. Jacksonville brings a team that puts the ball and play and plays scrappy, testing FSU’s ability to be ready to play and make the routine plays in the field. Last year FSU dropped 2 of 3 to JU during the regular season, so the Noles should be looking forward to getting some revenge.

The State College of Florida might be an unfamiliar name, but they’ll be quite the tuneup for the Noles. For years, SCF has been one of the best JUCO’s in the nation and produced big names into pro ball and college ball. Last year, the Manatees were 38-20. I’ll be looking forward to what the Manatees bring to Tallahassee and how one of the top JUCO programs can hold up with one of the top D1 programs.

FSU will also likely the date of the garnet-gold scrimmage soon as well as one other exhibition game to make a 4-game fall ball schedule. Obviously, the games don’t mean much or matter against anything, but this year’s fall ball will be one to watch, as Mike Martin Jr. will put his first marks on the FSU program as a head coach.

Update 9/3

FSU Baseball has made their fall ball schedule official, as it will add on 3 more exhibitions to the games above. FSU will take on the Ontario Blue Jays (a Canadian Premier Baseball League team of 16, 17, and 18 year olds) on 10/7 at 3 PM to open up the fall ball schedule. The other 2 exhbition games will be Garnet-Gold games as the Noles will play inter-squad games on 10/30 (3 PM) and 11/1 (6 PM). The 11/1 game will be the night before the UM-FSU football game, so it should draw a pretty big crowd.

In addition to the scheduled exhibitions, a source tells NoleGameday that the first day of official fall practice will be on September 30th. The ‘Noles will be together as a team for most of September as the will start team workouts this week. The Mike Martin Jr. era will officially begin this month. Same name, same goal, new era.
