FSU QB commit Luke Altmyer talks spring practice visit

Florida State commitment Luke Altmyer was in Tallahassee earlier this month to watch one of FSU’s first spring practices. We caught up with Luke to see how the visit was and to get his thoughts on what he saw while he was there.

Florida State identified its signal-caller for the 2021 class and got Luke Altmyer to pull the trigger for the ‘Noles. Since his commitment, he’s been working on building up the 2021 class as well as building strong bonds with the coaches.

He made his way to Tallahassee recently for a specific reason – to watch practice. He came away impressed with what he saw both on the field and in the film room.

“I enjoyed the visit, as I got to sit in on the quarterbacks meeting with them and Coach Dillingham,” said Altmyer. “The meeting was high energy. Coach Norvell was in and outgoing to other meetings. We talked about installs, terminology, plays, and looked at films from Memphis and from the previous day’s practice.”

Luke’s objective was quarterback focused. He wanted to see how practice was run and how the coaches interacted with the players and each other.

“I was impressed with the tempo of practice even though Coach Dillingham said he wasn’t pleased with it yet,” said Altmyer. “He thinks they’ll get there. I did see a lot of speed and athleticism on the field. I wanted to see how they practiced and worked. I was happy to see how engaged Coach Dillingham was. He was running around having fun with the players. Everything is new so the coaches don’t know how they’d respond but it went well.”

Luke also got a chance to meet with Coach Norvell, the coach that identified Luke early on and was a major reason Altmyer is a Nole.

“I headed home right after the practice but I did get a chance to speak with Coach Norvell,” Altmyer said. “We talked a lot about his coaching points, his expectations of excellence and his focus. He was focused on his work and his guys. Things were structured and high tempo with a focus on excellence. There are no excuses, whether it’s Day 1, Year 1, whatever. He loves the guys and it shows it how he coaches practices.”

Luke was planning on making his way to FSU’s spring game before the coronavirus spread all over. He told us he is happy his decision is made and that he doesn’t have to worry about what a potential disruption to his spring practices could have caused his recruitment.

We will stay in touch with Luke and keep you posted on when he’ll be visiting soon.
