FSU to play in 2020 Charleston Classic

Florida State basketball is getting an early jump on its 2020-21 schedule. According to USA Today, the Seminoles are among the eight-team field of the 2020 Charleston Classic. The rest of the field, as announced Thursday, includes Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Houston, Seton, VCU, and College of Charleston.

The tournament will take place from Nov. 19-22, 2020 in Charleston, South Carolina. The games will be held at COC’s home arena. The bracket is expected to be released at some point after the new year. There are some very interesting potential matchups here for the ‘Noles. The first one that instantly pops into my head is old friend Ike Obiagu, now at Seton Hall. There are still some hard feelings over his transfer which was rumored to be over his role. Obiagu is averaging 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and a block in 11.8 minutes per game in 201819. He averaged 10.7 minutes for FSU back in 2017-18. Do with those numbers as you will.

Depending on the bracket, this could also be the second consecutive year that Florida State plays Tennessee in a regular-season tournament. The Seminoles are currently set to play the Vols in the Emerald Coast Classic at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving.

Looking at the other teams in the fold, Oklahoma State and VCU would be intriguing contests. The Cowboys will bring in five-star prospect Cade Cunningham next season, a projected early NBA Draft pick in 2021, on the other side, FSU will have Scottie Barnes. That just sounds fun. The defensive battle between the ‘Noles and VCU would also be a heck of a battle.
