FSU, UF men’s basketball to meet early in 2019 regular season

The University of Florida men’s basketball team recently announced its non-conference schedule for the 2019-20 season. Normally, Florida State fans wouldn’t really care who the Gators are playing but one date on UF’s schedule holds some significance to fans. Their annual beatdown by the Seminoles, no matter the location.

Florida State and Florida are scheduled to meet early in the season, Sunday, Nov. 10 in Gainesville. The Gators have one game on their schedule prior to the matchup with FSU which means we can likely expect the ‘Noles to open the season against a different opponent before the short trek south.

In 2018, the two rivals opened the year against each other with Florida State coming out on top 81-60 behind PJ Savoy’s 20 points on 5/7 shooting from three-point range. However, early season matchups haven’t been the norm as of late in the Sunshine Showdown. FSU and UF have played one another in November just three times in the past 10 years (with one of those games being November 28).

Despite losing five seniors to graduation and Mfiondu Kabengele to the NBA, head coach Leonard Hamilton is looking to keep the school-record five straight wins over Florida going behind returning veterans like Trent Forrest, MJ Walker, and Devin Vassell.

There currently is no set timetable for Florida State to announce its entire non-conference schedule though last year they released it on July 17.
