Monday Mailbag: Jeff Sims, Kendal Briles, and coaching search

Last Week’s Mailbag

I just want to start this mailbag off by saying I’m extremely disappointed in everyone who takes the time to submit a question each week. Ask me about basketball! I think I’ve gotten one hoops question in the last three or four weeks total, which is sad, considering the powerhouse on the hardwood that is being developed in Tallahassee.

It’s officially the middle of rivalry week and Thanksgiving is also right around the corner. There aren’t many better times of year than when pigskin and turkey legs collide on the football field. That’s exactly what the ‘Noles and Gators are going to do this weekend in Gainesville. FSU may be close to a three-touchdown underdog but games like these are when the unthinkable can happen.

Expect this Florida State team to fight extremely hard to keep interim head coach Odell Haggins undefeated. Either way, it’s going to be an extremely tough contest for the Seminoles to pull out.

With that said, let’s see what we have in the mailbag this week and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

Sims is no longer posting anything FSU related after being 100% in. Concerned? – @a_sikoo

I’m definitely concerned. Jeff Sims reportedly took a visit to Georgia Tech over the weekend and it has been kept as under wraps as possible. The four-star QB is certainly exploring his options with Florida State’s open head coach slot still yet to be officially filled.

The longer this coaching search is drawn out, the more likely it is Sims ends up elsewhere. Luckily, he has a decent relationship with Kendal Briles.

If we beat Florida and win the bowl game, should we be ranked next year in the top-25 – @bray_ottinger_

I’d lean towards no, just because Florida State has underperformed its preseason expectations for three straight years now. The potential is there to be ranked early in 2020 though.

No news is bad news….? – @jford44

Bosses work in silence.

Would you like a scenario of Kendal Briles being the head coaching in waiting? – @tavis.r

I think if Bob Stoops is hired, Briles will be given the unofficial title of HCIW. It makes sense given the fact that Stoops isn’t expected to coach longer than 3-5 years and would give Briles a little more time to build his experience before stepping into the top role.

What would be your favorite bowl for FSU to play in? – @lukelmore

From the projections I’ve seen, FSU vs UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl would be an awesome draw for the entire state. It would also provide plenty of bragging rights.

Odds new coach announced on Sunday? – @johngierach

From what I’ve been told, the announcement is more likely to be Monday or Tuesday.

Any new word on the coaching search? Timetable? – @b_thompson8

It’s mostly quiet outside of James Franklin emerging as a candidate and Mike Norvell making his preference between FSU and Arkansas known. I still believe this is all a smokescreen and the Seminoles will get the guy they’ve wanted from the beginning, Stoops, next week.

Do we get Jaylan Knighton – @_80sbaby1

It’s doubtful. Jaylan Knighton is a major Miami lean following his de-commitment from FSU but he could rethink his decision following the Canes embarrassing loss to FIU. I think it’s most likely he ends up with Florida by the end of his recruitment, as depressing as that sounds.

Any news on the recruits coming in? – @randyr.305

Mainly that we should expect some guys to reopen their recruitments. A few of my guesses would be OL Alex Atcavage, DE Morvin Joseph, and Ja’Khi Douglas. Maybe Sims or one of the linebacker commits as well. Basically, more attrition is likely to come.

Score for UF game? – @nathan.davis85

Personally, I’ve got UF 24-20. I think we’ll see FSU fight extremely hard and be in this game in the fourth quarter, but it just won’t quite be enough against a nationally ranked Gators team. I know, not what anyone wanted to hear or what I wanted to type.
