Monday Mailbag: Wake Forest, FSU’s record, and QB talk

How did everyone’s weekend go enjoying some football with Florida State on its second consecutive BYE week? The Seminoles didn’t play on Saturday, right? Like most of you, I’m also going through the five stages of grief following FSU’s blowout loss in Death Valley. Just about everyone expected the ‘Noles to lose, just not so assuredly. This game was over midway through the second-quarter after Clemson went up 21-0, giving the Tigers more touchdowns than Florida State first downs.

It was just that type of afternoon. One that gave you Vietnam-style flashbacks of Clemson’s 59-10 thrashing of the ‘Noles a season ago in Tallahassee. The loss to the Tigers in 2018 was essentially the beginning of the end for head coach Willie Taggart’s first season. FSU would go on to lose three of its final four games, all against ranked opposition, as one of the legendary bowl streaks in college football came to a heartbreaking end.

The Seminoles have a choice to make. They can either falter as they did a year ago or come together and get back on the right track. It won’t be easy, with three road games mixed into home tilts with Miami and Syracuse. It all starts this Saturday at Wake Forest.

Let’s see what we have in the mailbag this week.

When is Ryan Fitzgerald getting a shot to play? – @isaac_richardson34

I don’t think we’ll see him this year. MAYBE he gets a shot late in the Alabama State game. It just doesn’t make sense to potentially hurt his confidence during a redshirt year when you have Ricky Aguayo and Parker Grothaus.

Does Jordan Travis get any reps this year? – @allthrillz

Doubtful, like with Fitzgerald, I could see Travis playing some against ASU. James Blackman and Alex Hornibrook are entrenched at the top of the depth chart.

When do you think our football team will make the top-25? – @landonbasketball2

It’s gonna be a minute.

If FSU beats Wake Forest, how many points do you think FSU wins by? – @josh_tall_23

Hmmm, to answer your question, I’ll go with four. 38-34 ‘Noles in a high-scoring affair on the road (this isn’t my official game prediction).

When will Jeff Sims play next year? – @oj.clout

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but he most likely won’t. Jeff Sims needs a redshirt season to finetune some of his mechanics and accuracy. In my opinion, he won’t be ready to start as a true freshman, especially with a veteran Blackman likely taking another step forward over the offseason.

I still think we go 8-4 or 7-5, what about you? – @dariusallen_

I think 7-5 is the most likely outcome at this point. At Florida is almost certainly a loss and then the Seminoles could slip up again either at Wake Forest or maybe even against Miami.

Is Willie going to continue to rotate QBs? – @thechosenone_224

No, I think Taggart and the entirety of the offensive coaching staff saw what happens when you don’t decide on a quarterback. Eventually, it blows up in your face and man did it ever against Clemson. The quarterbacks couldn’t get in a rhythm due to consistently being switched in and out of the game and that clearly affected the offense as a whole.

Taggart dodged a question about the two-quarterback system during a press conference earlier this week. I doubt we see the ‘Noles break it out against Wake Forest.

Who do you think is QB1 moving forward? – @mike_johnston14

Personally, I still believe James Blackman should be the starter. He gives Florida State the best option at hitting on big plays down the field with his arm strength. Obviously, Blackman had his worst game of the season against Clemson but he’s the type of guy that will be in the film room working on his mistakes every second he can throughout this week to get back on pace.

Blackman is still likely the future of this program at the position in 2020 and potentially 2021, you’ve got to keep rolling with him.

Will Marvin Wilson’s talk to the team about playing for the Seminole logo make a difference? – @sarah_shelton_24

Hopefully.
