NoleGameday Staff Score Predictions: FSU vs Georgia Tech

We made it. Florida State football is finally back after navigating through the longest and strangest offseason in recent memory. The Seminoles are set to take the field against Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon in Mike Norvell’s debut as head coach.

Though the Yellow Jackets aren’t the opponent FSU originally expected to open the 2020 season with, they’ve got to be feeling pumped up for this matchup. Georgia Tech finished just 3-9 in its first year under Geoff Collins, while not looking impressive on either side of the ball in the process. They do return most of their production from 2019 so GT’s progression will be something to watch.

FSU has mostly disappointed over the last three seasons but there is still a lot of talent on this roster. We’ve seen signs of that talent throughout fall camp but until the ‘Noles step up and consistently prove it on the field, there will still be doubts. Thankfully, Norvell has an experienced staff working hand-in-hand to drive this team to be its best.

Our staff provides their predictions and analysis for the first game of the Mike Norvell Era.

Matched up against a Georgia Tech team who was dreadful in 2019 during its first season under coach Collins while implementing new schemes on offense and defense, FSU has a clear advantage. Though the Seminoles have had struggles of their own in recent seasons, a lot of those mistakes can be fixed with competent coaching and an enhanced focus, which Norvell has brought in great folds to Tallahassee.

In my opinion, this is a game where the offensive line has to set the tone early against a defensive line that accumulated just 10 sacks last season. They need to come out, punch the Yellow Jackets in the mouth, and prove they’re tired of being disrespected. This is an opportunity for James Blackman to play calm, cool, and collected while making plays in the pocket to his talented wide receivers. The new-look running back crew should make some plays as well. I’m also calling for Cam McDonald to come down with his first career touchdown.

Defensively, I expect the front-four and secondary to play extremely well. Adam Fuller should be having a lot out there with the variety of packages he’ll be able to put on the field.

Score prediction: FSU 37, GT 13
