NoleGameday Staff Score Predictions: FSU vs Pittsburgh

Florida State is back in action tomorrow after its second bye week of the season as the Seminoles prepare to take on Pittsburgh. The week off came at the perfect time, as it gave the team a chance for its banged-up players to get a break and allowed the coaching staff to hone in on improving its strategies. There is also some optimism that star wide receiver Tamorrion Terry will be able to take the field for the first time in a month, which would open up the deep ball.

This is a big game for FSU. With five games remaining in Mike Norvell’s first season in Tallahassee, this is an opportunity to build momentum as the schedule softens, outside of Clemson, as we move forward. The Panthers have lost four straight games behind an inconsistent offense and it’s unclear who will start at quarterback. They do have one of the top rushing defenses in the entire country so Jordan Travis and the running backs will have their work cut out for them.

This is a very tough game to predict because we simply don’t know which version of Florida State will show up on Saturday. Will it be the team that valiantly upset North Carolina behind its strongest performance of the season or will it be the team that laid an egg a week later in Louisville? The hope is that the BYE week will benefit the Seminoles and that the coaching staff will have a few things under their sleeves that the Panthers aren’t prepared for.

We also are still unsure which quarterback will start for Pitt. Joey Yellen has started the last two games but Kenny Pickett has taken more reps in practice this week. In the end, I think the Panthers’ elite defense will do enough to limit FSU’s offense in a grind it out type of game.

The team is still too soft mentally and haven’t shown they can learn and grow. The Louisville loss showed more to me than the UNC win. Hopefully, the bye week fixed things but I have doubts.

This is an interesting game. FSU is top 30 running the ball while Pittsburgh is one of the best stopping the run. They allow 69.1 yards per rush. While their defense is strong, their offense is equally as bad. They can’t run the ball, and they haven’t scored since Pickett went out. I think this is an ugly game that FSU wins.
