NoleGameday Staff Score Predictions: FSU vs UL-Monroe

Florida State is just two days from getting back on the field with the goal to avenge its season-opening defeat to Boise State. However, nothing is certain with a veteran UL-Monroe team coming to Tallahassee. Once again, it’ll be another scorcher inside Doak so I hope everyone has an extra water bottle.

Regardless, this game is basically a slight tune-up for the Seminoles before week three when they travel to Virginia. Like the Cavaliers, the Warhawks have a mobile quarterback and they want to establish the run. Last week, FSU got shredded for over 200 yards on the ground and has had its fair share of problems with running QB’s in recent memory. Lamar Jackson in 2016 comes to mind…

Senior signal-caller Caleb Evans isn’t Lamar Jackson. However, he is capable enough to get it done on the ground when the team asks it of him. Evans has run for 1,202 yards and 23 touchdowns over the last two seasons. It’s certainly something this Florida State defense has to key on with Bryce Perkins up next week.

On offense, it’ll be about playing a complete game. Florida State racked up 31 points and countless big plays against the Broncos in the first half of week one. It all came crashing down in the final 30 minutes of the game. Consistency is key against ULM.

Our staff gives their score predictions for week two below. We think the ‘Noles will take a step forward this weekend.

As I said on Hear The Spear earlier this week, this isn’t going to be an easy game for Florida State. The Warhawks ran the ball extremely well in week one, albeit, against Grambling State. On the other side, the ‘Noles had zero answers for the Broncos on the ground. UL-Monroe is also bringing in an experienced defensive.

That being said, the talent differential is obvious here. The first half against Boise State showed us just how good this offense has the potential to be. I think they’ll play a more complete game in week two and the defense will also show more signs of it coming together.

Florida State needs to win this game and convincingly. Head coach Willie Taggart needs this now more than anything.

I think Kendal Briles really flexes the offenses’ muscles this weekend. ULM will be without their best pass-rusher as well as his backup Saturday which should make life a little easier on James Blackman. I think Briles looks to establish the run early and often with Cam Akers and Khalan Laborn opening up play-action as the game goes on. I would be surprised if the ‘Noles don’t hit the 40 point mark in this one.

Defensively, Both Willie Taggart and Harlon Barnett had admitted they did not have the players in the right position to make plays last week. I’m less confident things are cleaned up on that side of the ball but the Warhawks will simply be outmatched in terms of talent. I’ll go with Florida State cruising to a 45-20 victory. It won’t be pretty at all times but the job gets done.

The film room had to be a busy place this week for the ‘Noles. If they learned from mistakes and saw where their mishaps were happening, the Seminoles should be able to rebound easily against ULM. UL-Monroe’s running game is going to be a problem for Harlon Barnett’s defense if it’s anything like what we saw last week from his side of the ball.

Most of these mistakes are easy to fix, it just depends on how focused this team is at learning from their errors and showing it on the field. I think QB James Blackman has a solid game and you see more out of WR Warren Thompson and RB Khalan Laborn.

After last week’s nightmare, I expect the ‘Noles will bounce back with a win here. Last week’s defensive performance was embarrassing and I expect some improvement, but the Warhawks will look to exploit the deficiencies in the box. This game may be quite similar to the Samford game last year. Look for Cam Akers to put up huge numbers as he should get more touches than last week.

It’s hard to predict when you’re not knowing which FSU will show up. Will it be first half FSU or second half FSU? The Warhawks ran for 300+ last week and I expect them to be looking at the Seminoles’ run defense and drooling after what they saw on film. The offense will be ready to put last week’s second-half embarrassment behind them. Defensively… I just don’t know how much can change in a week until some of the younger players get in the rotation more. I’ll still say FSU wins, but I’m not exactly confident in it.
