Report: Norvell favors FSU opening over Arkansas

Florida State has been diligent thus far in its search for the program’s fourth head coach since 2009 (Bobby Bowden, Jimbo Fisher, Willie Taggart, and ???). The Seminoles are keeping their options on the table in the event that they don’t land former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.

One name that has flown a little under the radar is Memphis HC Mike Norvell. A younger coach, most fans prefer established names such as Stoops, Matt Campbell, PJ Fleck, or James Franklin for the opening. However, Norvell is definitely interested in the job and the only thing standing between him leaving the Tigers is a measly $500K buyout. He was a name we listed in our candidates to replace Taggart a few weeks back.

According to a report published by FootballScoop on Thursday, Norvell has met with Arkansas, who fired Chad Morris on Nov. 10, but he is more interested in the opening down in Tallahassee. Like FSU, the Razorbacks are trying to wrap up their head coaching search by the end of the regular season. But, this is potentially big news for the ‘Noles.

Norvell may be less proven than many on the board but, like Kendal Briles, he’s a young offensive mastermind. He’s led Memphis to a 35-15 record over his four seasons with the school, including a 9-1 record that sees the Tigers at No. 18 in the polls. They are expected to finish as one of the top G5 teams in the country this year.

At just 38 with ties to the Southeast, Norvell could be the younger up and comer that brings the fire back to Florida State. He’s a high-risk, high-reward hire at a point in time when the Seminoles need stability. He may not be a perfect choice but if things fall through with the other options on the board, and he wants to be at FSU should the administration pull the trigger? Norvell’s hire would probably signify the end of Briles’ time in garnet and gold. What do you think of Norvell, ‘Noles fans?
