Terms of Mike Norvell’s deal released

Shortly after new Florida State coach Mike Norvell was officially introduced in Tallahassee, details of his contract began to leak. It sounds like a steal.

According to Jim Henry of the Tallahassee Democrat, Norvell has signed a six-year deal that will pay him $3.7 million annually. There will likely be bonuses in the deal that will allow him to net closer to $5 million depending on how the team performs.

Regardless, it’s a lot less than former ‘Noles head coach Willie Taggart signed for in 2017 when he left Oregon. Taggart was given a six-year, $30 million contract with bonuses that could’ve made him an extra $2,525,000 per season.

Florida State also committed to paying 85% of Taggart’s buyout, which ultimately is one of the reasons they’re in this situation. Immediate buyout terms for Norvell’s contract aren’t known but you can be sure the administration was smarter putting together a contract this time around, or at least hope they were.

Taggart’s 10 assistants made roughly $5.3 million combined in 2019, including $1 million for Kendal Briles and $980,000 for Harlon Barnett. Assuming the salary pool for assistants remains roughly the same under Norvell, FSU could use the remainder of the differential in his contract to further increase that number
