Three newcomers to keep an eye on in Saturday’s Garnet and Gold game.

Florida State returns to Doak Campbell Stadium this Saturday for their annual Garnet and Gold game. While the hype surround the weekend doesn’t come close to that of a year ago, there are still plenty of story lines to pay attention to.

Following a disastrous 5-7 season, there have been multiple coaching changes and a new pool of talent entering the program. With glaring weaknesses at several position groups, Willie Taggart is looking for anyone who can come in and contribute right away.

One name that should come as no surprise is defensive back Akeem Dent. The true freshman from West Palm Beach had offers from nearly every power 5 school in the country but eventually ended up in Tallahassee. Dent made his presence known from the very first week of spring practice. On one instance, Dent recorded back-to-back interceptions during a 7-on-7 period in practice catching the eyes of everyone on the field.

Dent will suit up for the Gold team this weekend and should have plenty of chances to make plays in the secondary.

Another name that keeps popping up this spring is linebacker Jaleel McCrae. The former four-star from IMG Academy was a key part of #Tribe19 largely due to an immediate need at linebacker.

While the majority of all spring practices have been closed to outsiders, McCrae’s name keeps coming up anytime the linebackers are mentioned. Despite suffering two ACL tears in high school, McCrae looks to be fully healthy and ready to contribute from day one.

McCrae can be found at the second level for the Garnet squad this Saturday afternoon and will be worth keeping a close eye on.

On the offensive side of the ball, it goes without saying that the offensive line is in need of some serious help. Randy Clements may have found that in freshman Dontae Lucas.

Lucas has the mean streak you look for in an offensive lineman. He lines up for every rep with the intention of putting defenders on their backs. A source that was at Florida State’s last scrimmage said Lucas is already pushing the older players and will be expected to contribute as a true freshman.

While we still do now know Lucas’ defined role for 2019, just having an elite talent available will only be a good thing for the front five.
