Week 1 Bold Prediction: Dontae Lucas will be the top-rated offensive lineman

Dontae Lucas will be the highest-rated offensive lineman during Florida State’s debut against Boise State.

Why it’s bold:

Dontae Lucas is a true freshman who has only been on campus since January. It is extremely rare for a true freshman to start, especially on the offensive line.

Why I believe it will happen:

Lucas has been nicknamed “The Pope” and for good reason. He was constantly baptizing defenders during his time at IMG Academy. Lucas has done an incredible job at reshaping his body as he has lost over 40 pounds since the time he committed. The staff was clear to Lucas that he needed to lose some bad weight in order to contribute early and Lucas has done just that. Willie Taggart and Randy Clements have praised Lucas’ work ethic and his physicality ever since he stepped foot on campus and he has been rewarded with the starting job for the inaugural game of the 2019 season.

This decision proves the confidence that Taggart and Clements have in Lucas and his ability to perform under pressure as a true freshman. It also helps that the returning offensive linemen that Lucas will be playing alongside all graded poorly over the course of the 2018 season which was the worst offensive line in Florida State history. There will be some missed assignments and some freshman mistakes from Lucas, but his mauler mentality is something that was greatly needed for the position group. I look forward to seeing him put up an impressive performance against Boise State’s stellar defensive line and for him to build upon it throughout the remainder of the season.
