Week 5 Bold Prediction: Florida State’s Defense will have Best Performance of the Season

Bold Prediction:

Florida State’s defense will have their best performance of the season and will hold NC State to under 24 points.

Why it’s bold:

Harlon Barnett’s defense has been abysmal this year allowing the opposition to average 34 points a game. Injuries to Joshua Kaindoh and Jaiden Lars-Woodbey are tremendous losses at positions the ‘Noles were already thin at.

Why I believe it will happen:

There has been an improvement over the past two weeks regarding the defensive unit for the ‘Noles. The addition of Jim Leavitt to the staff has been crucial to improving the defense from downright terrible, to working their way to becoming average. The linebackers run fits are improved and the pass rushers have had some success getting to the quarterback. The Wolfpack’s quarterback’s struggled last week against Ball State, both turning the ball over with an interception each. Matthew McKay could see his role diminished if improvement isn’t shown and the next man up for the Wolfpack is someone ‘Nole fans are pretty familiar with, Bailey Hockman.

The former Seminole has only attempted 10 passes in his collegiate career and if McKay continues to perform poorly, I could see the defense taking advantage of Hockman’s inexperience. If Marvin Wilson, Cory Durden, Robert Cooper, and Janarius Robinson build on their performances from last week, it will be a long night for NC State’s offensive line. Last week’s performance wasn’t perfect, but it was just what this team needed to build some confidence. Willie Taggart stated that this team needs to learn how to win again, and the win against Louisville is a step in the right direction. If Florida State wants to become bowl eligible, this is a must-win game. I’m not expecting the defense to look perfect, we won’t see that all year, but it will be the best the unit has looked all season and will help the ‘Noles win comfortably Saturday evening in Tallahassee.
