Week 8 Bold Prediction: FSU Defense Shuts Down Greg Dortch

Logan Stanford/Icon Sportswire

Prediction: Wake Forest’s wide receiver Greg Dortch will not have more than 50 receiving yards.

Why it’s bold: Dortch, a sophomore, is the Demon Deacons’ leading receiver. He has 592 yards through six games with five touchdowns.

Why I believe it will happen: Florida State’s defense continues to improve every week. For most of the game, they looked sharp against Miami, but one player that stood out is defensive end Brian Burns. Burns recorded three tackles for loss and two sacks as well in the loss against the Hurricanes. He led the ‘Noles defense and his performance earned him the top spot as the NCAA’s leader in sacks. After the bye week, he sits at No. 5 on the list with six total sacks. Burns is also tied for fourth in the NCAA in forced fumbles.

Burns is known for putting pressure on offenses during every snap of the game. His ability to create high-pressure situations will continue against Wake Forest. Their quarterback Sam Hartman will not be able to get passes off in time and will result in Greg Dortch not performing well. Wake Forest has thrown eight total interceptions this year and FSU will look to capitalize on this and get a few of their own.

Dortch is Hartman’s go-to guy on the field. He leads the team with his five touchdowns on the year and leads the team in receiving yards. Dortch has two games on the year with 150 receiving yards, and then two more with 90+ yards. He is a machine when it comes to yards per game. Against FSU’s defense, his performance will be significantly limited and he will not record more than 50 receiving yards.

Florida State’s defense led by Brian Burns will look to shut him down and limit Hartman’s ability to find Dortch down the field. In what has been a disappointing start to the season for the ‘Noles, Burns has been a bright spot every week. Before the season, he was highly touted as one of the best edge rushers and now halfway through the season, he has definitely lived up to the hype. You can expect no less from Burns this weekend when the ‘Noles take on Wake Forest at 3:30 pm on Saturday.
